Home education is the ideal way of studying history. Rather than having to follow a curriculum which inevitably takes specific periods of history out of context, children can learn about times or ancient cultures that interest them, read historic fiction for people-based backgrounds, and browse the Internet for relevant information.
Many families like to use time-lines, so the big picture of history can be seen. Below are a few sites which are particularly appropriate for home educators, or anyone else studying history.
BBC History - an excellent resource with child-friendly activities, information, pictures, links, details about current BBC history programmes, and timelines.
Mr Donn's history - extensive resource with explanations about life in many ancient and modern cultures - fairly large text, not too complicated. Appropriate for children of all ages wanting to know more.
The Vikings - pictures and simple explanations about the Vikings, intended for children aged 7-8, with some links for older children.
The Victorians - a school project about this period in British history, intended for primary age children studying this subject.
Victorian history - school packs intended for approx age 11-14 showing history related to early stamps. Either download pdf files or order a free package from the British Postal Museum.
Ancient Egypt - a very nice site linked to the British Museum, with lots of information about life in Ancient Egypt. Choose from the menu, then click the picture that appears. Each option has further details, explorations, and graphical challenges. Ideal for older children.
Ancient Greece - an educational site covering many aspects of ancient Greek culture, including philosophy, drama and fighting. Suitable for older children or teenagers.
History on the net - full resource covering all historical periods studied in English schools, including some games and interactive activities.
The Tudors - chronology, life in Tudor times, arts and music - plenty of detail on this period of English history.
British History 1500-1950 - encyclopedia of factual articles covering this period, with just about every aspect possible. Indexes are a little way down each page, after advertising. Most suitable for older children or teenagers.
Nazi Germany - thorough and clear explanations of how Hitler was able to come to power, including a brief biography of Hitler himself. Appropriate for older children or teenagers interested in this period.
History channel - a huge resource,covering world history, ancient and modern with many features to explore. Probably most suitable for teenagers.
Christian history online - an archive of articles with a Christian perspective on history.
